USA and Vietcong forces in the 1960s. Essay The tactics used by the Vietcong and US military forces were very different and changed during the course of the war. At the beginning of the war the Vietcong (NLF) army was aggressive whilst the US army was defensive. The Gulf of Tonkin incident became Americas excuse to become aggressive towards the Vietcong. In 1965 General W. Westmoreland developed the strategy of search and destroy. Its objective was to find and kill any members of the NLF. US soldiers found this difficult however as the Vietcong always dressed in civilian clothing, and killing peasants by mistake was not uncommon; if hes dead and Vietnamese, hes a V. C. was the view of the troops carrying out the search and destroy missions. It was clear from the outset of war that the US had far more technologically advanced weapons than the Vietcong, which they used throughout the conflict. B-52 bombers altogether dropped 8,000,000 tons of bombs between 1965 and 1973which equated to 300 tons of bombs per person living in Vietnam. This was over three times the amount dropped during the whole of World War Two. Aside from bombs the US also dropped a considerable amount of napalm, a mixture of petrol, phosphorous and a chemical thickener which attaches itself to the skin causing horrific fifth-degree burns to the victim, which could quite often be an unlucky US soldier. Agent Orange, a complex biological weapon was dropped over a lot of the thick vegetation of Vietnam, causing all plant life to die, potentially to expose any hiding Vietcong. The US pioneered the development of anti-personnel bombs, smaller than those dropped from the B-52s, such as the pineapple, which shot shards and needles of metal in all directions. With the many different developments of anti-personnel bombs it was the USs aim not to kill the North Vietnamese but to injure them badly. It cost the Vietcong worse in time and resources to help the injured, whilst dead simply needed burying. Ironically, the Vietcongs supply of explosives for mines and suchlike mostly came from the 800 tons of US bombs that were dropped every month which failed to explode. In order to counter the powerful and technologically-advanced US army, the  Vietcong employed guerrilla tactics which had been used to great effect in Mao Zedongs victory in winning China for communism. The Vietcong were split into small groups of between three and ten soldiers, known as a cell. Cells worked together but knowledge between them was kept to a minimum so that if the cell or part of it was captured and tortured, any confessions made would not damage the Vietcong side very much. The cells, who dressed in civilian clothing, would move between South Vietnamese villages winning the support of the NLF from the villagers. They would help the peasants, not do anything against their wishes and educate them on poverty and other issues, in exchange for food, political and sometimes even military support. To defeat the more powerful enemy, a guerrilla has to dictate the terms of warfare to its advantage. The Vietcong chose the setting of the borders of the thick dense forests of South Vietnam as ambush was very easy. Another of the technical advances on Americas side was the realisation that the helicopter could directly bring the troops straight into the heart of the battle and get them out again quickly. However there was a massive risk related to this. Once the US had decided on a landing area for the helicopter it was not difficult for it to be shot and destroyed by the Vietcong even in the few seconds it was touching the ground. After the troops had been dispatched they would be surrounded on most sides by an invisible enemy hidden in the forest, making the USs task a nightmare. It was not that the Vietcong and NLF leaders did not care that thousands of their soldiers were being sent into battle and being killed. It is that they had the will to continue doing so until the US gave up. Physical losses to the US were not as great as those losses from the American persons view of the war. This I will explain in the next and final question; Why was there such different reactions in the USA to the countrys involvement in the conflict in Vietnam in the 1960s.

Gay Rights Persuasive Speech

What’s the definition of marriage to you? To me, it’s a great bond of two people under holy matrimony. Notice that I didn’t say a great bond of man and woman. Ninety percent of people might disagree on what I have said, but what about the other ten percent? The other ten percent have another twist on the fact that marriage doesn’t necessarily have to be the bond between man and woman, but may be as well, a brilliant bond between man and man or woman and woman. I truly believe that homosexuals should have the right to be able to marry their significant other and should be able to have as many rights as an average married couple because they should go ahead and love the person they really love, without any laws holding them back just because they’re homosexual. Homosexuals should be able to have rights, just like us. The reason that homosexuals choose to marry is due to the fact that marriage isn’t mainly about benefit, or respect, but mainly about love and family; the same reason that heterosexuals (straights) choose to marry. But, the one thing that holds them back is the law. Many states in the U. S banned homosexual marriage due to the fact that marriage between man and woman has been around for the past millennia. Lots of people thinks that same-sex marriage is one of the reasons that and that it supposedly wrecks the balance between traditional marriage and the balance between man and woman that’s supposed to equally balance the differences and family to create a brand- new creation to create man and woman as one. Phooey. People don’t know who is able to enforce marriage. The government has the actual power to marry people but society helps families through the emotional parts. Since marriage has no absolute definition, it’s not fair to not let gays marry. The state should allow gays to be with each other so that they can have a â€Å"marital† relationship. Even though most of society doesn’t accept the fact that homosexuals should marry, they are beneficial to others as well as states. Most homosexuals have the weight of pressure society gives to them in order for them to live a daily and average life. They’re like a very fragile vase ; they are beautiful people on the inside, but shatter instantly if you hurt them. Many homosexuals try very hard to fit in society, and yet society brings them own to a certain extent that they have no choice but to either commit suicide or hide in celibacy. Just think of washing your hair. If shampoo gets in your eyes, you feel an awful sensation and you want to wash it out right away. To homosexuals, fitting in into society and being accepted into society is just like that, but the pain never goes away. It just shatters my heart and feelings that society look down towards homosexuals, and that they tease them just how my older cousin did to me when I was a kid . Perhaps there would be more happy families and fewer sad deaths every day if society was more considerate and content for homosexuals. One of the main things that society doesn’t understand is that the ability to love and commit to each other is such a special gift that no one can take away or give two people the ability to love each other. The state could recognize these commitments, or they couldn’t. If you truly love someone to such a point where you basically die for the right of marriage, then I don’t really get it if the state were to not legalize homosexuals marrying, and at the same time, making many homosexuals die for the sake of legalizing just one tiny law out of thousands, maybe even millions. Homosexuals should have the right to marry their significant other. You all, being very well educated citizens of this so called â€Å"free nation† , should stand up and fight for the protection of another unique human; a homosexual. I would choose to gladly accept a law to rid of the invisible chain that locks the homosexuals to the law. Would you?

The Squire Hotel Group Question one Evaluate the performance measures in place at the Squire Hotel. The Squire’s group hotel is doing well performance wise although it does have a few problems. The rooms division is performing well due to the hotel being constantly kept at a high occupancy level. However, the food and beverage section of the hotel group isn’t doing so well. This is clearly indicated by the Restaurant Manager, Elizabeth Dicken, who says that she is forced by upper management to reduce costs that in turn are affecting her restaurant to the extent that she is loosing customers. Also the confidence of the staff also starts building up day by day. They should encourage their staff to up sell and give them bonuses on their performance level. By doing this staff gets motivated towards doing work and up sell their products. This would help the hotel as well their staff. Regarding complaints they should keep feedback form in the room as well as at the reception desk. This is the best possible way to identify how their service works and they will come to know whether there should be any improvement in their services. They should even start with internet based feedback form as they can try to deal with their customers as soon as possible. This will help in case their they are really lacking customer satisfaction. Some people are really shy about complaining for small things by doing these it would remove element of doubt in the mind of customers and they will know their silly mistakes.
